Admission Criteria
The first requirement is a Laurea (B.Sc.) degree, or an equivalent title obtained abroad.
The students are admitted to the M.Sc. programme based on the evaluation made by a specific committee, which evaluates the candidates depending on their career and the relevance of their educational background to the characterizing topics.
The candidates are selected based on their average mark in the Bachelor exams, weighted with the corresponding number of credits and with thresholds depending on the course:
- B.Sc. degree in Automation Engineering at Politecnico di Milano: the average mark must not be lower than 22/30.
- B.Sc. degree in other programmes offered by the School of Industrial and Information Engineering at Politecnico di Milano: the average mark must not be lower than 23/30.
For all the candidates that are not in the above categories, the admission is decided on a case-by-case basis, based on the resumé and the final mark of the B.Sc. programme. Usually, the candidates with no relevant background, average mark less than 23/30 or final mark less than 90/110 are not admitted.
To be admitted, an English proficiency certificate is also required, according to the official rules of Politecnico for all Engineering Master programmes.
If the opinion of the members of the committee is that the background of a candidate is lacking important topics in the characterizing subjects (Automatic control, Applied Mechanics, Electrical machines and drives), they may assign some “alignment duties”. These concern Bachelor courses to be included in the Master study plan as alternatives to free choices. To the candidates who followed the profession-oriented study track (with internship) in Automation Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, the alignment duty of Calcolo delle Probabilità e Statistica (10 credits) will be assigned.
The credits associated to all such duties contribute to reach the total of 120 credits and the corresponding marks affect the average mark.
If the background preparation is particularly incomplete, the committee may assign also some “curricular integrations”, to be fulfilled as “single courses” before the enrollment.
In any case, a description of the prerequisites needed to successfully attend the main subjects of the M.Sc. programme is reported in the prerequisites document on this website.
